Ol Pejeta Bush Camp
Camping, adventure, wildlife and conservation are the four things that first spring to mind when thinking of Ol Pejeta Bush Camp. Owned and personally run by Alex and Diana Hunter this is a camp formed through a passion for Kenya and its natural wilderness offering guests something a little different to the usual safari circuit.
Situated in the Laikipia region of northern Kenya, the Ol Pejeta Conservancy is 100,000 acres of game rich wilderness and is actually the largest conservancy in Laikipia.
Ol Pejeta Bush Camp is as the name suggests a real ‘bush camp’ where you can expect comfortable but basic tented accommodation (with the luxury of an en-suite bathroom), delicious food and great company. As well as having four 4x4 vehicles for game drives, a great number considering that the camp accommodates so few guests, they also have two land cruisers. For those who like the idea of guiding themselves for a day, you can depart camp in a land cruiser with a map, picnic lunch, radio and should you wish a tracker and head off out into the conservancy on your own.
As well as being home to good numbers of all of Africa’s ‘Big Five’ – buffalo, elephant, leopard, lion and rhino – and a variety of other animals, guests also have the opportunity to enjoy a plethora of additional activities during their stay. Exciting game drives can be combined with a visit to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, spending a night out at Elephant Hide, taking a trip to a local village school or learning about current tracking and conversation projects and the behind the scenes work that goes into running a conservancy.
While viewing wildlife from fantastic open 4x4 vehicles is often what draws visitors to Africa there is so much more happening on this inspiring continent and Alex, Diana and Ol Pejeta give visitors the opportunity to explore this. Combining well with a few days in the Masai Mara before finishing at a more luxurious lodge to enjoy a bit of pampering, for those wanting to discover the real Africa, Ol Pejeta is not to be missed.
