Luxury rail journeys in Africa

The history of the train goes back to a time much earlier than the first form of machine assisted locomotion with roots that can be traced as far back as the Romans who used hand pulled carts on tracks as a form of transport.

Throughout our history rail travel has appealed to adventurers and romantics and it continues to evoke nostalgic visions of a time gone by, when life moved at a slower pace, when the magic and mystery of the journey was as important as the destination.

Rail travel in Africa combines the irresistible ambience and opulence of a period era with subtle modern innovations that offer exceptional standards of luxury to discerning travellers. Relax in sumptuous, vintage style comfort as an elegant and powerful steam train carries you across meandering landscapes.  The sound of the engines whistle and the smoke drifting past your window will transport you back in time as the most spectacular and varied scenery unfolds beyond your window.

A luxury rail journey is perfect for families with older children, groups of friends and honeymooning couples.

"Rovos Rail, 48 hours of sheer pleasure. Rohan Vos was present and welcomed all his guests (what a character). We had a large double bed which was very comfortable. The bathroom was well equipped. Meals were taken in one of two dining cars, both were excellent, how they managed to produce such wonderful meals on a moving train I do not know. Upon arrival in Pretoria Rohan Vos again greeted us - he had flown up for the occassion."
