Grumeti River Camp
The Grumeti River Camp is situated in a remote valley in the western corridor of Serengeti National Park which is approximately 50 kilometres east of Lake Victoria in Tanzania.
Grumeti River Camp is a flamboyant camp built on the water’s edge in a forest beneath a canopy of evergreen makuti trees. The interiors are vibrant and colourful, reflecting the personality of the local people and the excitement of Africa. Each tent features a large ornate bed made with Tanzanian Cypress. The spacious tents are decorated with Yoruba beaded antiques and beautiful hand blown Kenyan glass. Delicious Pan African meals are prepared in front of you on traditional ‘jikos’ (fires) or in stone ovens and whilst you eat your lovingly prepared dinner under the vast African sky, the nocturnal orchestra of hippos, owls and bush babies and the crescendos of the predatory lion and hyena will be your entertainment on this fabulous bush adventure.
The Grumeti River Camp is unique in that it lies in the path of the great migration and as a result it abounds with resident game all year round. The Grumeti River supports a lush riverine forest which is a sharp contrast to the surrounding plains and it is host to some of the Serengeti’s more unusual species such as the black and white colobus monkey.
Another interesting dimension to this camp is that it is situated on a bywater of the river. It is therefore very well known for its resident populations of well fed crocodiles which lie patiently in wait for the herds of migrating wildebeest and zebra which trek from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara in Kenya during June and July in search of fresh grazing. The river is also home to families of hippopotamus and the birdlife is varied and prolific. The splendid bird and game viewing opportunities can be enjoyed in an open top 4x4 vehicle with an expert guide and during your stay you will also have the opportunity to explore the magnificent Lake Victoria, which is the second largest fresh water lake in the world.
