The Luangwa Valley is a beautiful and remote region that can only be accessed through a select group of tour operators. It is considered by many safari enthusiasts to be one of the world’s greatest wildlife sanctuaries and is home to a good variety if animals including huge herds of wildebeest and lions. There are also good numbers of zebra, wild buck, baboon, hyena, impala, bush buck and Cookson’s giraffe. There are also great numbers of birds in the region who are attracted to the large sausage trees. Birds like the Pel’s fishing owl, osprey and Carmine bee eaters are quite commonly seen.
One of our favourite Zambia safari camps in the North Luangwa National Park is Mwaleshi Camp. It is situated on the banks of the Mwaleshi River in a very remote part of the North Luangwa National Park. The camp is surrounded by open plains, rolling hills and areas of riverine forest and has a huge diversity of wildlife present, including lions, elephant, giraffe, leopard, jackal and hyena. The main activity at this intimate camp is walking. You will be accompanied by a highly experienced armed guide, who will share all his wonderful knowledge about the bush with you, in an informative but humorous way. Other activities include day and night game drives and swimming in the Mwaleshi River.
A Zambia safari to the North Luangwa combines well with a walking safari in Zambia or an exclusive Botswana safari. It also combines well with a South Africa safari and a few days on the sandy beaches of Mozambique or Mauritius. The Cape Winelands and the Garden Route also complement this Zambia safari very well.
