Family Safaris

To share a big adventure together and see the exciting wildlife in beautiful African settings has all the ingredients of a unique family holiday.  Add in easy access to beaches and the chance to come into contact with other cultures in a friendly non commercial environment and you have a holiday of a lifetime.  We have recently been called by someone organising a safari for his honeymoon, who recalls his family safari as a teenager as the best holiday of his life.  And by a couple who have been waiting 10 years since their safari honeymoon to treat their own children to a family safari.

Every Africa Exclusive safari is 100% tailor-made, and this is particularly important in a family safari, where there are many factors to consider, and we suggest you call us at the earliest stages of planning.  Some countries like Namibia and Zambia are better suited to teenage or older families, while others like Kenya and South Africa are also suitable for families with younger children.  We have an older family page and a younger family page to give you ideas for each age group.

A question we are sometimes asked is “Is it safe?” and the answer is “Yes, as safe as other family holiday destinations”.  Safari areas are usually a long way from human habitation and your holiday will involve hopping by air from one magical safari location to another.  Another related question is “How old should children be to go on a family safari?”  The answer depends upon the maturity of the child.  They need to be able to sit quietly in an open vehicle, to behave when sharing a small camp with other adults and certainly not wander off on their own, and to obey instructions from your guide if you go into the bush on foot or in a boat.  They will then be rewarded with an experience which will be far better than you could imagine from “Big Cat Diary” because it will be real and you will be completely immersed in Africa.

South Africa is one of the best destinations for watching marine mammals. The Cape coastline, where the two mighty oceans of the Indian and Atlantic converge, is an absolute must for nature lovers and especially marine enthusiasts. Annually it attracts between 3000 - 4000 humpback, southern right, brydes and killer whales that come to pay homage to these warm shallow waters. (Read more)
