Kenya is a great choice for a family safari, especially in August when two million wildebeest and zebra are roaming the Mara Plains. Cottars Camp, on a huge private reserve, has amazing family suites – with sweeping lines of brilliant white canvas. An hour to the east you can stay in the private house at Tortilis, and awake to panoramic views of Kilimanjaro towering before you. From the family cottage at Loisaba lodge you have a private pool, your own guide and can choose from quad biking, hot air ballooning, a camel safari with Maasai and horseriding as options to your open vehicle drives.

In South Africa’s malaria free Madikwe reserve you can treat your family to three unforgettable days in the fabulous Nare Suite or Safari Suite at Jaci’s Camp, or if you like the thought of elephant back safaris, Camp Jabulani’s family villa should definitely be on your list.

There’s always something happening by a big African river and your family can wake to the sound of hippos laughing in the Zambezi fifty yards from the delightful two bedroom Kigelia House at Sausage Tree Camp, with its huge deck overlooking the river. Even bigger is Kiba Point which overlooks the wild Rufiji River in Tanzania’s remote Selous Game Reserve. It has four ensuite bedrooms, private pool, super cuisine and is a base for thrilling safaris by boat, on foot and by open vehicle with your expert private guide.
