Family Safaris in KwaZulu Natal

KwaZulu Natal is in eastern South Africa. It’s the home of the Zulus; it has a fabulous wild coastline, high mountains, lots of animals and rich culture. It’s safe and easy to drive around in a hire car and there are loads to see and do. So it’s ideal for a family holiday with a difference.

Zulu War Battles

Stay at Fugitives’ Drift Lodge near Rorke’s Drift and relive battles from the film “Zulu”. The owners arrange special family battlefield trips around spectacular Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. Learn tales of heroism, hold a Martini-Henry rifle from the 1870s and learn what it was like to be a British redcoat or a Zulu warrior. This is real fun and educational and you can meet proud Zulus living in the area today and learn about their culture. Nearby are some of the famous Boer war battlefields like Spioenkop where Sir Winston Churchill, Mahatma Gandhi and Louis Botha’s paths crossed.

Phinda for Wildlife

North of the battlefields are exciting wildlife reserves. At luxurious Phinda you can see elephants, rhinoceros, big cats and much more. Look up - you may see a leopard lounging in a tree! We arrange for your family to have your own private vehicle and guide who will find the best game viewing spots for you. He’ll teach the children to identify animal tracks and unlock a new world of amazing facts about the bush and the big and small creatures that live there. South African safari lodges are the most luxurious in Africa and Phinda is one of the best! There are big pools, great food, games and lots going on between safaris. And the wild Indian Ocean beach is right on the doorstep.

Mountains and Beaches

Just west of the battlefields are the spectacular Drakensberg Mountains with waterfalls, Zulu villages, bushmen’s paintings and excellent walks. A few hours’ drive east is the long sandy Indian Ocean coastline. At Rocktail Bay you can go on a night-time safari to see huge turtles come ashore to lay eggs, or babies scrambling to the sea. Older children can dive or snorkel on the magnificent reefs. Further south is beautiful Ballito with its beach restaurants and entertainment.
