Meet the Maasai

A safari holiday gives your family a wonderful chance to meet local tribal people and experience their culture. This is especially true in Tanzania and in Kenya where colourful maasai and samburu tribes live. These encounters are arranged privately for your family in a natural way. There are no tour groups and no-one pressing you to buy things or give money.

Some of Kenya’s best safari lodges are located on private reserves owned by tribal people. They work in the lodge, protect the reserve from poaching and the village benefits financially from the partnership. Your family can enjoy superb wildlife viewing and can also spend some time experiencing the local culture at first hand.

Become a Junior Warrior

At Saruni Mara Lodge, Maasai warriors will teach your children secrets of bush skills, and ancient folklore which have enabled them to thrive in the bush for centuries. Learn to track animals, understand the medicinal use of plants, learn to use a bow and arrow. Get dressed up and face painted as a Maasai! In the evening listen to the hauntingly beautiful harmonies as they sing around the camp fire. Another day you can visit the village school and meet children and have a chance to see life in a real remote village.

Camping adventure

From Sabuk Lodge your private guide will take your family on a walk through the beautiful rift valley scenery with friendly tribal people. Your luggage and food follows on their camels. Talk and share stories with them and maybe spend an hour fishing or watching elephants. In the afternoon they set up a simple comfortable camp and after a delicious dinner they teach you Maasai songs around the fire under a big starry sky.
