Botswana Safari Holiday Fact File

Getting there

Botswana safaris are reached by a two hour flight from Johannesburg which has daily overnight flights from London.  It is two hours ahead of GMT.  Leaving London at 1900 you can expect to be watching giraffes munching leaves of Okavango trees by the middle of the following day.  Travel between camps is by short flight usually lasting under an hour.  If you need to carry lots of luggage with you, some planes can take 20 kg per person baggage.

Seasons

This is a complex story and you should call us to discuss the best time to travel.  Essentially, Botswana is an all year round safari destination and yet the cost of your safari is very seasonal which makes it one of Africa’s most expensive places between June and October and fabulous value the rest of the year.  Baby animals are born and migrant birds are present from December to March. The Kalahari Desert is at its best from February to April, the Okavango Delta is beautifully replenished between April and July and huge herds of elephant gather in Linyanti and Savuti from August to November.  Something wonderful is always happening in Botswana.

Is Botswana for you?

Botswana is probably the best place in Africa for a really private, relaxing, luxurious safari in vast open landscapes.  In Botswana they have perfected the concept of the luxurious tented camp, some of which give the penthouse suite of a five star hotel under canvas and thatch!  They are not all as opulent as that but the general level of comfort is excellent.  Botswana has a great abundance of wildlife and birds and is especially good for elephant’s, big cats, wild dog and birdlife.  The activities are fairly leisurely and mainly by open vehicle, sometimes combined with short walks.  The Okavango Delta is the only place in Africa where you can be punted gondola like in a local mokoro canoe, and the Delta is one of the most idyllic places in Africa.  The exclusivity makes Botswana a perfect honeymoon and is ideal for couples celebrating a special occasion.  The better value for money at Christmas and Easter makes it good for families, and the lower age limit is generally 8 years.

Combining Botswana

Botswana combines very conveniently with Victoria Falls and Namibia creating an unbeatable “Desert and Delta” experience.  Leaving in the afternoon you can be in Cape Town that evening so Botswana works well with the
Cape and the Winelands.  To reach other beaches you need an overnight stay in Johannesburg, and can then fly easily to Mauritius, Seychelles, Mozambique Islands or even Zanzibar.
