Abu Camp
Abu Camp is situated on the western side of Botswana’s Okavango Delta in a game rich concession surrounded by open grasslands and beautiful island sanctuaries.
Abu is an Arabic word meaning “everything to do with elephants” and the camp is named after their chief elephant which starred in the films The White Hunter Back and The Power of One. Abu unfortunately passed away in 2003 and is survived by a herd of five adults and seven juveniles, all of which have been rescued from zoos around the world.
Abu Camp has six luxury tents set deep in an ancient riverine forest and each of these tents has its own tree shaded deck area overlooking the lagoons. The tents are stylishly furnished with comfortable armchairs; hand carved mahogany four poster beds and spacious en-suite bathrooms with copper or ceramic baths. The windows of the tents are roll down canvas which will give you the feeling that you are never too far away from the sights and sounds of your natural surroundings. The food at the camp is lovingly prepared from fresh ingredients by an expert safari chef and then served to you on the teak veranda. After dinner you can sit around the fire and exchange stories over a glass of wine or retire to your luxurious tent and enjoy the silence of the bush from your private deck as you reflect on the day’s activities.
As the camps name quite aptly implies, the experience at Abu Camp is all about the majestic elephants. You will be given the opportunity to bond with the elephants over a period of three days and will then be expertly guided on an elephant back safari that will take you on an unforgettable journey of exploration through the waterways of the area. You will have close encounters with the animals without them even realising that you are there, watching them as they interact with each other in their natural habitat. Besides the resident elephants, you may also see herds of giraffe, zebra and antelope and there are over 500 species of birds in the area, making it the perfect location for bird watching.
Other activities include nature walks through the pristine wilderness with an expert guide, 4x4 games drives, night drives and mokoro trips along the tranquil papyrus fringed waters of the Okavango Delta.
