Chitabe Camp
Chitabe Camp is situated on a large concession that borders the Moremi Private Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. The camp itself is situated on one of the most beautiful islands in the Delta. Due to its remote location, the camp is only accessible by light aircraft.
It is a small, intimate and private camp has been built on raised wooden decks under a lush canopy of indigenous trees and consists of eight luxurious and spacious twin bedded East African style tents. The camp has a spacious lounge, dining area and an inviting swimming pool in which you can cool off after your activities. If you fancy the idea of sleeping out under the stars, there are two comfortable and secure hides.
Chitabe Camp overlooks the floodplains which attract large numbers of game and due to its position, surrounded by perennial swamps, grasslands and wooded acacia islands – the game viewing is diverse and spectacular. This thriving habitat also attracts an impressive array of predators. Buffalo, cheetah, elephant, leopard and lion are just a few examples that you will encounter on your daily game drives through this remote wilderness. Depending on the time of year you visit you may be lucky enough to spot some of the 160 resident wild dogs – which have featured in the coffee table book titled Running Wild. Chitabe Camp has established a conservation fund for wild dog and a portion of the accommodation fees goes towards a research project that covers an area of 33000 square feet.
Chitabe Camp is the perfect camp for those looking for that classic safari experience. You will enjoy morning and afternoon game drives and night drives will give you the rare opportunity to see some of the areas nocturnal mammals such as the aardwolf, civit, genet, porcupine and serval. Other activities include interesting game walks, tracking animals with the help of a highly experienced and knowledgeable guide.
The bird watching at Chitabe Camp is superb and varies throughout the year depending in the water levels. Raptors, like the African Hawk Eagle and Hooded Vulture are especially common. Ground Hornbill, Greater Honeyguide, Scarlet – chested Sunbird, Red-billed Hornbill, Gabar, Goshawk and conveys of red-Billed Francolin are often seen on game drives.
