Jack's Camp
The award winning Jack’s Camp is located deep in Botswana’s Kalahari Desert on the edge of the Makgadigadi Pans – the largest saltpans in the world. The pans are a relic of one of the world’s largest super lakes which dried up thousands of years ago as a result of the continued shifting of the earth’s crust. Explore the Kalahari and Makgadigadi National Park with its endless vistas of rolling grasslands and palm lined desert.
It is a classic desert safari camp spread out on an island of palm trees with ten en-suite tents fashioned in authentic classical 1940’s style. Persian rugs and cool cotton contrast with the rugged wilderness. There is even a Persian styled “tea tent” complete with a small library. The walls and shelves are lined with old maps, photographs and interesting bones and artefacts which give the camp its sense of uniqueness. Jack’s Camp is an oasis of peace and quiet – a complete desert experience.
The guides at Jack’s Camp team up with Zu/’hoasi Bushmen and guide guests on morning walks and game drives. The activities are informative and fun with the focus on desert adapted wildlife, geology, archaeology and anthropology. The guides, many of whom are qualified zoologists, will explain how the unique desert wildlife has adapted to the dry conditions of the desert.
You will also visit remote archaeological sites and the Bushmen trackers will demonstrate the unique connection between their fascinating culture and the harsh natural environment. Guests can also venture out into the impenetrable saltpans on quad bikes.
During the wet season the dry landscape is transformed and flocks of flamingo and other migratory species descend on the watery grasslands. Herds of zebra and wildebeest arrive for the fresh grass and the desert is teeming with predators and game. It is very likely that you will to see the rare and elusive brown hyena during your stay at the camp.
Families are welcome at Jack’s Camp.
