Elephant bulls clash at Somalisa Camp

Guests at Somalisa Camp were treated to the sighting of lifetime recently when they came across two huge elephant bulls fighting just by Somalisa Pan. By the time the guide and guests arrived one elephant had already sustained a severe stab wound in his chest and was bleeding profusely. Most of the fight took place behind the bushes which meant the guests could not get particularly good photos, but the experience was exciting nevertheless. It was not long before the older bull collapsed and the youngster immediately took advantage, ramming and beating the dead bull with his tusks. What happened next shocked everyone; another old elephant bull appeared from the east, shocking the young bull who fled immediately. As the old bull approached the collapsed elephant he fell to his and lunged forward, placing his tusk through the collapsed elephant’s mouth and into its head. Bizarrely, he then got to his feet and sauntered off, not looking back once. It was agreed by all who witnessed it that this sighting was truly a once in a lifetime experience, but that it was also incredibly emotional to see nature take its course in this way. The team at Somalisa assisted the transport to the scene for the national park staff who removed the tusks and took them to a safe and secure holding, out of reach of poachers. Zimbabwe was once considered the top destination for a fantastic luxury safari, and with sightings like this one it’s no surprise! The country is now back on its feet and welcoming tourists once again for superb African safari holidays.
