Younger Families

By younger families we mean with children between 3 and 13 years old. You should call us to discuss your family’s situation and interests. Generally we would not suggest you visit Rwanda or Zambia where activities like gorilla watching and more serious walking have age limits in the early teens nor Namibia where the interest is more exclusively scenic. In the rest of Africa your young family can enjoy a wonderful safari.

Families can enjoy small remote camps and lodges, and a few like Tortilis Camp and Cottars Camp in Kenya and Vumbura Plains in Botswana have family accommodation with two bedrooms and a shared living room under one roof. We will also arrange for you to have your own private guide and vehicle so you can be completely flexible in your game viewing and enjoy the undivided attention of your expert guide. Look forward to many precious shared moments, like watching spellbound as a family of elephants tending their babies slowly emerges from the tree line to drink at a waterhole at sunset. You will also witness the hilarious antics of a troupe of baboons as the play, squabble and frantically chase each other around the bushes.

We want to encourage you to enjoy different activities, and Loisaba lodge in Kenya has mountain bikes and horses as well as open vehicles and a hot air balloon. Ant’s Nest in South Africa has a similar range of activities and is specially designed for families, while at Kwara Camp in the beautiful Okavango Delta you can enjoy boating, dug out mokoro canoes and fascinating night drives to find nocturnal creatures like leopard hunting. If a member of the family enjoys recording facts, keep a record of the different birds you see – you might come across a hundred with help from your eagle eyed guide.

Modern anti malarial tablets mean you need not limit yourself to a malaria free safari, but if that is your preference you will be heading for South Africa which has some superb malaria free reserves like Madikwe in the north and Shamwari on the Garden Route. In South Africa you can combine your safari with visits to Cape Town and Victoria Falls, you can go whale watching at Hermanus and see delightful meerkats close-up at Meerkat Magic. For a week at the beach there is plenty of choice including amazing resort hotels with every facility on Mauritius and excellent family hotels on Zanzibar and the Kenya Coast.
