Today marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of British archaeologist, Mary Leakey. Leakey is best known for her discovery of the very first fossilised Proconsul skull, the skill of an extinct ape believed to be the ancestors of humans. The skull was found in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania, where much of Leakey’s work took place. If you’re interested in archaeology, why not take a Tanzania safari to the Ngorongoro Crater? Here you can learn more about Leakey’s work and visit the world famous gorge where it all happened.
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is one of the top properties in the crater area. It’s very luxurious, with deep mahogany woods and rich purples and reds throughout, and is perched right on the crater’s edge giving you simply breathtaking views of this unusual landscape. You can explore the world famous surrounds of the gorge, known as the Grand Canyon of Humankind, in a private vehicle with your own guide. This is the most famous archaeological location in East Africa and there’s a lot to see here from 3.6 million year old hominid footprints to excavation sites. Put simply, this is a fascinating place to visit. At the top of the gorge there’s a small museum where you can learn more about the story of human origins and evolution.
What’s more, as well as all the history, from Ngorongoro Crater Lodge you can also enjoy lots of wildlife activities too.

There is a world of difference between one of our tailormade safaris and most package holidays printed in a brochure. Package holidays are usually designed to be as cheap as possible and of course involve large numbers of people doing the same thing. Our safaris use small, more exclusive and remote camps usually with guests flying in, and often virtually everything is included in the price. The experience is completely different.
Many of these small lodges and camps have broadly similar prices, and it is possible to arrange a superb two week safari for between £4,000 to £7,000 per person ($7,000 – $11,000) season dependant, all inclusive. Realistically it is difficult to reduce that figure, and by including Botswana in peak season, chartering a private plane, disappearing to some magical desert island, or flying at the front of the plane it’s easy to substantially increase that figure!
