Safari Holiday at Porini, Kicheche and Ras Nungwi

Day 1

Depart 2000 from London's Heathrow Airport on Kenya Airways flight KQ101 to Nairobi, Kenya.

Days 2 to 4

On arrival at 0635 you will be met and taken by road into the Selenkay Conservation Area where you stay for three nights at Porini safari camp (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Kenya provides a beautiful location for a once in a lifetime safari for both you and your party with some fantastic game viewing memories. Kenya has some of the most luxurious lodges for the perfect African safari on your holiday.

The Selenkay Conservation Area lies a few miles north of Amboseli National Park and is an important dispersal area and rangeland for wildlife migrating out of Amboseli. In May 1997, a Kenyan organisation called Porini Ecotourism agreed with the local Maasai community to set aside the area for a reserve for wildlife so that the habitat could be protected and wildlife conserved.

The Selenkay Conservation Area is well off the beaten track and has not been visited by tourists until now. It lies in the heart of Maasailand and the animals are truly wild and not yet habituated to the presence of vehicles. The numbers of tourist visitors are being limited to a maximum of eight per day to retain the wild and unspoilt nature of the area and to minimise the impact on the environment. Within the conservation area the following animals have been seen recently: elephant, lion, leopard, cheetah, Thompson's and Grant's gazelles, gerenuk, impala, oryx, lesser kudu, zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, warthog, striped hyena, jackal, bat-eared fox, Caracal, African wild cat, serval cat, genet cat, honey badger, mongoose and ostrich. Birdlife is prolific, especially birds of prey.

The comfortable accommodation at Porini camp includes six spacious luxury tents, comfortably furnished and with en-suite bathrooms including shower, wash basin and flush toilet. Tents have solar-powered electric lighting. The safari camp is small and is on the lines of the traditional luxury safari camp but with more comfortable bathroom arrangements than were available to the big game hunters of earlier years!

During your stay you will be taken through the bush to the infamous Amboseli National Park where you can spend the morning on a safari game viewing drive before returning to Porini for lunch. In the afternoon you will be able to take an escorted walk with Maasai trackers and guide who will give you an insight into their fascinating culture and way of life. After returning to the safari camp for dinner you will have the opportunity to go on a night drive with a chance to see nocturnal animals such as aardvarks, serval cats, caracals, bat-eared foxes, African wild cats and maybe even the elusive leopard.

Days 5 to 7

Today you will be transferred by road to Nairobi's Wilson Airport where you board a scheduled flight taking you into the Mara National Reserve, in Southern Kenya. On arrival you will be met and taken to continue your luxury safari, where you stay for three nights at Kicheche camp (fully inclusive of meals and activities).

Kicheche safari camp is situated only a few kilometres from Aitong on the Lemek Group Ranch near Masai Mara National Reserve. The safari camp is tucked away in a large copse of indigenous trees (olive, croton and euclea) with excellent access to areas rich in wildlife and flora. The view from the camp stretches out across the rolling hills and plains, the little changed home of the Maasai tribes people.

There is superb walking in the surrounding hills, across the open plains and in the forested valleys with local Maasai guides. Walking safaris can be arranged during your stay at the camp giving you the opportunity to see game in their natural habitats without 4x4 jeeps. The Maasai also take care of security in camp, adding local colour and interest as well as ensuring your safety. You can also go on safari by vehicle, encountering big herds of elephant, buffalo, antelope, and many predators, including lion, leopard and cheetah. Between June and October the annual migration of two million wildebeest and 300,000 zebra passes through the Mara, one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles.

Each of the ten comfortable spacious double tents has a verandah and is fly-screened to prevent intrusion of insects. Each luxury tent contains beds, bedding, towels, wash stands, chairs, tables, water jug (with fresh drinking water and glasses), baggage stands, coat hangers and torches. There are en suite shower and toilet facilities and hot water is available when required.

There is a well-sited fully equipped mess/dining tent with fly-screened sides. Lighting at night as much as possible is by solar power but each tent is also provided with a hurricane light. The fully equipped camp kitchen provides delicious food cooked by an experienced safari chef.

Four-wheel drive vehicles with roof hatches are used for all game drives from Kicheche Camp. Families are often allocated a 4x4 Safari jeep to themselves.

Your hosts at Kicheche camp are conservationists and professional safari guides, who have many years experience of the African bush and a wealth of knowledge on all aspects of life in Kenya. They all have an inherent love and enthusiasm for the country from the spectacular wildlife and the local people, to the unique birds and rarest butterfly.

The camp's aim is to have a minimal impact on the environment, to help provide income to the local Maasai, and to give you one of the best safari experiences possible. All the game viewing fees are distributed through a local self-help group and the funds used in the local community.

Day 8

Today you return by scheduled flight to Nairobi where you will be met and taken to the Holiday Inn for a one night stay (bed & breakfast).

This historic hotel, formerly the Mayfair Court Hotel, has been operating since the 1940s, and has been transformed into a comfortable, spacious, modern hotel, whilst retaining its distinctive architecture.

Situated in a popular shopping and residential suburb close to the city centre, the Holiday Inn is only 20km from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and offers a full range of services and facilities. Guests can look forward to experiencing the traditional warmth and hospitality for which Holiday Inn is renowned.

All 171 guest rooms are well appointed whilst the friendly and informal Oasis Restaurant, which is next to the pooldeck, is open for breakfast. The hotel also has Kenya's only Spur Steak Ranch, which is very popular.

Days 9 to 14

In the morning you will be transferred to the airport for a scheduled flight to Zanzibar. On arrival you will be met and taken by road to the northern tip of the island to stay for six nights at Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel, a remote beautiful beach location(half board excluding all water sports).

Located on an expanse of beach wilderness on the northern tip of Zanzibar, and protected by an expansive coral reef, Ras Nungwi Beach Hotel is an ideal location for all water sports, or merely relaxing in the temperate water while soaking up the equatorial sun.

The hotel is built from hand-cut fossilised coral limestone and other natural materials, and literally blends into the landscape.

Rooms are positioned to maximise the panoramic sea views and cool island breezes. Individually furnished with handcrafted four poster beds and indigenous decor including carved doors, all rooms are en-suite with ceiling fans and balcony frontage. Mosquito nets over all the beds ensure a peaceful night's sleep.

The Zanzibari chefs are renowned for sumptuous seafood buffets and spicy island fare, all freshly prepared. From calamari and coconut curries to freshly grilled line fish, they will keep your taste buds alive whilst ensuring a healthy diet. Breakfasts are traditionally centred round the variety of freshly prepared pastries and local fruits, and there's plenty to choose from - Zanzibar has over twenty different types of mango, and an abundance of bananas, papaya, pineapple and passion fruit amongst many others! Lunches are light and appetising, and dinners are seasonally characterised by huge buffets and fresh fish barbecues under the stars.

The unspoilt beach at Ras Nungwi is arguably the best on Zanzibar, and the nearby coral reef yields a beautiful lagoon. Low tides reveal sparkling white coral sand bars, and rock pools teeming with marine life. The proximity and variety of the surrounding reefs makes Ras Nungwi the perfect diving destination, where you can dive from 12m down to over 100m on surrounding channels and atolls. Ras Nungwi has a fully equipped PADI dive centre with expert instructors and modern boats. If you do wish to dive it is advisable to book this prior to your arrival. The combination of a Kenyan safari with a beach stay in Zanzibar is perfect for both game viewing and relaxing, giving you the best opportunity to see Africa at its best.
