The Cox Family

Words cannot describe how we all felt about it. A tremendous family holiday. We canoed, rode camels & horses, learnt how to make a bush fire, went animal tracking, learnt a Masai dance, played “spearing the lion”, learnt how to shoot a bow and arrow, learnt about plants the local people use and that is only a bit apart of course from all the birds and animals. I also had eye ball contact with a red spitting cobra and although an experience not one to be repeated – I was very lucky!!!

So a huge thank you to you for arranging it all so brilliantly. Now I just have to save to go again!!!

Never been on a Safari in Kenya?

There is no doubt that a Safari in Kenya is one of the most spectacularly beautiful countries on the African continent with mountain ranges, vast open plains, the Great East Africa Rift Valley lakes, and harsh desert environments. Mass market tourism in the form of minibus safaris has tended to attract negative publicity and for this reason when we design Kenya safaris we make use of the small, highly personalised camps and lodges which are located on enormous areas of private land where no other tourists are allowed.

So if you have never been on a Kenyan Safari then now is the time to experience the beuty that is Kenya and the vast memories that Kenya safaris create.

Spectacular Kenya Safaris

Kenya is renowned for its spectacular and varied scenery and during the course of your Kenya safari you will have the opportunity to visit the spectacular dry volcanic region of Samburu, the vast rolling plains of the Masai Mara and an idyllic coastal area with wonderful beaches. The Masai Mara region witnesses the annual migration of up to two million wildebeest, 250,000 zebra and thousands upon thousands of other animals. July sees the arrival of this fantastic natural phenomenon so that if the holiday is scheduled during the main summer holiday period of July and August you are assured of magnificent game viewing in prospect. In both Samburu and the Mara there are good populations of lions and these will be seen along with many other delightful creatures such as giraffe, as well as a host of other fascinating smaller animals like baboon and warthog.

A luxury Kenya safari is the perfect holiday for families. Travel between each location is undertaken by air, allowing more time for game viewing, fun and educational activities, and less time for children to become agitated, tired and restless on bumpy and dusty road journeys. Throughout the luxury Kenya safari holiday there will be several opportunities for the children to be taken on special educational wildlife activities with the chance to meet Samburu trackers and Maasai warriors, or fun activities like learning to throw a spear or light a fire by rubbing sticks together.

Safaris running smoothly for all the family

Game viewing at each location on Kenya safaris are carried out in specially adapted four-wheel drive vehicles in the company of an expert English speaking naturalist/driver and in addition, outside national parks, there are opportunities for nature and bird walks where you can also learn about medicines taken from plants and trees.

At the end of your luxury Kenya safari, a stay on the Kenyan coast at an attractive hotel which overlooks a glorious white sandy beach is the perfect way to complete your family holiday. A host of children’s activities are available here, including educational as well as recreational games, and also there will be a chance to visit the neighbouring Mambo Village Crocodile and Nature Park.

Kenya Safaris

Although Kenya is a relatively small country in the east of Africa it is a great destination for safari holidays as it can offer something that only one other country can – Mountain Gorillas. Kenya, along with Uganda, has the sort of mountainous terrain and rainforest in which these huge beasts make their habitat. With the help of an experienced guide you can track the gorillas through the forest in the footsteps of famous conservation experts such as David Attenborough and Dian Fossey. The latter is the famous zoologist about whose life the movie Gorillas in the Mist was made. The scenery in Kenya is worthy of any Hollywood epic as the country is situated in the eastern part of the Albertine Rift, so you will enjoy Kenya safari here immensely.

What are the benefits of Safaris to Kenya?

If you visit Kenya not only are you travelling to what is nowadays a relatively safe and stable country, but you will have a safari holidays experience that not many other people can claim to share. Therefore your money will be put back into the conservation projects to help these primates which are heavily endangered - Mountain Gorillas have sadly always been a prime target for poachers. Furthermore there are also fascinating habitats such as the Nyungwe rainforest which is home to hundreds of smaller species of flora and fauna and is an ideal location for bird watching. Nyungwe is one of three national parks in Kenya including the Akagera National Park. Akagera is a great place to see other Big Game during your safaris in Kenya such as elephants and buffalos with giraffes and zebras present too. If you come from countries such as the USA, the UK and South Africa, there is no visa requirement to enter Kenya. Otherwise you will need a visa which does not cost much. However, whether or not you need a visa it is necessary to have a vaccination for yellow fever if you want to return to the country you are travelling from. Kenya Safaris can be as short as three days and as long as you want.

Big Game on a Kenya Safari

Going on Kenya safaris is an amazing experience where you are likely to be able to see a breathtaking array of animals in their natural habitats. Kenya boasts some of the best wildlife parks in the world including the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This means that during a Kenya safari you are almost guaranteed to see one of the big five animals; buffalos being one of the most common large animals in the region. Kenya also has some of the world’s critically endangered species including the black rhinoceros, the desperate shrew, the Pemba flying fox, the Peter’s musk shrew and the Telford’s shrew.

Kenya Safari to the Serengeti Plain

You will probably be familiar with the Serengeti National Park from all the times you might have seen it from your sofa during wildlife documentaries. However, nothing can prepare you for the wonder of seeing it in real life during a Kenya safari. It is Kenya’s oldest and most popular national park and is a world heritage site. There is an entrance fee for the Serengeti National Park and you will require a guide so it is recommended that you visit with a professional tour company as part of your Kenya Safaris. You don’t want to miss out on seeing anything so an experienced tour guide could really make a difference! The Serengeti is famous for the great migration but there is a lot to see even if you miss the migration including leopards, cheetahs and all three African jackal species. There is also 500 or more species of birds. One of the things that you will enjoy during a trip to the Serengeti is the vastness of the plains. The Serengeti is 5,700 square miles and after the rainy season is transformed from sunburnt savannah to green fields with the occasional wildflower. It really is an opportunity to be truly close to nature and escape the crowds and concrete of city life.

See the Great Migration on a Kenya Safari

The Serengeti plays host to the world’s largest mammal migration which is also one of the ten natural wonders of the world. Around October every year approximately two million mammals travel from the northern hills to the southern hills in search of water and then return back to the northern hills in April. The journey is arduous and incredibly dangerous for the animals taking part and involves crossing the Mara River which is filled with crocodiles. Approximately 250,000 wildebeest will die each year during the migration. If you plan a Kenya safari to Serengeti specifically to see the migration then make sure that you visit at the right time of year and allow plenty of time as the migration times are not hugely predictable. You will also need to inform your tour company as it will be more costly and may require travelling deeper into the plains, especially if you wish to see any of the big predators.
