Amboseli National Park
The Amboseli National Park is situated in the Kaijado District of the Rift Valley approximately 160 miles from Nairobi in Kenya. This diverse ecosystem spreads across the Kenya-Tanzania border where you are greeted with classic scenes of East Africa - herds of free ranging elephant strolling across the plains with the snow capped Mount Kilimanjaro in the background. Amboseli offers you a wealth of game viewing activities and excellent walking safaris.
The fantastic array of wildlife and the contrast between the arid areas of the dry lake bed and the oasis of the swamps is astonishing. The park is supported by an underground water supply filtered through the volcanic rock from the snow melt on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. This constant water supply attracts a variety of wildlife including giraffe, impala, wildebeest, zebra, buffalo as well as the big cats – lion, cheetah and leopard. The birdlife is abundant, especially in the vicinity of the swamps and lakes which have a large variety of water birds.
The best time to visit is between July and October during the warm, dry season. At this time a curious feature is the shimmering dry lake beds where false mirages populate the horizon. The dry season is followed by short rains in November and December and a humid period between April and June.
