Tsavo National Park
Measuring 8500 mi², Tsavo is the largest National Park in Kenya and due to its size it has been spilt into two areas – Tsavo East and Tsavo West. It borders the Chyulu Hills National Park and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in Tanzania. Inside the Park the Athi and Tsavo Rivers converge to form the Galana River. Most of the Park consists of semi-arid grasslands and savannah. Its popularity as one of the world’s biodiversity strongholds is due mainly to the vast amounts of diverse wildlife that can be seen.
If you are looking for solitude and privacy as well as the chance to explore some unspoilt wilderness, then the Tsavo National Park is the perfect destination. Due to its proximity to the Kenya coast it is a great safari option for those wanting to relax on the beach after a safari without having to spend too much time travelling. It combines well with an itinerary that includes the nearby Amboseli National Park.
Tsavo East is a beautiful landscape with variations of green enveloping the Park and river banks that give rise to lush vegetation. This undeveloped land is home to a vast numbers of animals which include antelope, buffalo, black rhino, giraffe, eland, elephant and lion. It is a great destination for photographers with its fabulous light and unbelievable views. The sight of dust red elephants wallowing and spraying the waters of the Galana River is one of the iconic images of Africa.
The middle section of the park has many cave and rock paintings to explore. The Parks main attractions are the Lugard Falls, the Yatta Plateau, Mudanda Rock and the Aruba Dam. The Lugard Falls feature strange eroded rocks through which the Galana River flows and then plunges into frothy rapids and crocodile filled pools. The Yatta Plateau is the world’s longest lava flow which measures approximately 200 miles in length and attracts many species of migratory birds. The Mudanda Rock is a whale shaped rock that looms over a natural dam drawing thousands of elephants. The Aruba Dam is visited by thousands of animals and is a fantastic game viewing destination.
