Pumulani Lodge
Lake Malawi was formed during times of seismic upheaval when the earth’s crust was split in a long gash stretching from the Dead Sea right down the length of Africa, as far as the Zambezi River. The floor of this great rift contains Africa’s spectacular long narrow lakes with coastal plains rising into steep escarpments. The southern most lake in the chain is Lake Malawi, the water’s of which feed into the Shire River and from there are carried by falls and rapids through deep gorges and winding across plains until the Shire spills its waters into the Great Zambezi River. Stretching a distance of almost 570km, Lake Malawi boasts a coastline of striking beauty and variety. With its width at some points as much as 80km, it gives the impression of open sea but its waters are fresh and sparkling clear
Pumulani is an exclusive new lodge enjoying a spectacular setting on the unspoilt western shore of the Namkumba Peninsula, surrounded by Lake Malawi National Park – a World Heritage Site. The National Park is a wonderful place to see literally hundreds of species of fish including rare and colourful cichlids and snorkelling straight from the white sandy beach is a delight.
Pumulani Lodge has ten individually designed spacious villas which are spread out along the lush hillside overlooking the lake, offering the ultimate in design and comfort. Each of the villas is different, varying in size from a generous 125² metres up to 175² metres and they boast a large bedroom featuring either king size or twin beds, a spacious living area and a private wooden deck with a panoramic view of the lake. The name Pumulani means “rest well” in the local Chichewa language and that’s exactly what you get at Pumulani – the chance to unwind in a beautiful and tranquil setting!
In addition to relaxing on the wide sandy beach or around the stylish infinity pool, there is a range of activities to enjoy and these include water skiing, sailing, diving, wake boarding, kayaking, snorkelling, fishing and birdwatching. Birdwatchers will be entranced by the wealth and the variety of birdlife on Lake Malawi and as well as endemic species it is also possible to see many migrating species as they pass north and south. Expert guides are on hand to help you identify birds on the lakeshore, in the gardens of the lodge and in the wooded hillsides, and guided nature walks are included during your stay.
After a wonderful day enjoying the African sunshine what could be more inviting than a sunset scenic cruise on Pumulani’s traditional wooden dhow. This marvellous forty foot sailing boat was hand built by local craftsmen and is powered by a large triangular sail and a forty horsepower engine. It is the perfect way to experience the beauty of Lake Malawi described by the explorer David Livingstone as the “lake of the stars”.
