Vamizi Island
Vamizi Island is one of a string of beautiful little “desert islands” scattered in the western Indian Ocean, a few miles from Mozambique. This area has an amazing array of reefs, all of which are untouched, and many of which are relatively unexplored and protected, providing marvellous snorkelling and diving opportunities. There is an immense abundance of tropical fauna including dolphins, potato groupers, moray eels and turtles, and almost every kind of Indian Ocean coral is represented here. Most of the dive sites are less than fifteen minutes boat ride from Vamizi and wall dives drop from 15 metres to over 100 metres.
The accommodation at Vamizi Island Lodge is in ten luxurious beach houses set roughly 70 metres apart and each with its own stretch of glorious beach. This is a snorkellers paradise and beautiful fish can be seen within feet of the shore. Each beach house has a large bed, some single and some king size, a private lounge/sitting area and a sundeck, as well as an en-suite bathroom. Two of the six houses offer perfect family accommodation with two en-suite bathrooms and shared sitting areas.
The standard of cuisine is excellent and of course features local seafood including locally caught calamari, lobster, crab and many fish - all of which can be enjoyed in the open sided thatched restaurant. Special diets can also be catered for.
The island is roughly eight miles by one mile with no fewer than six different beaches, one of which is five miles long, and you share this little corner of the Indian Ocean with over 130 species of birds, various monkeys and coconut crabs. On the other side of the island there is a small traditional fishing village.
This is a supremely relaxing and private place which enjoys excellent weather for most of the year. Private dining can be arranged, and when you are not sitting reading a book, drinking a glass of chilled wine or exploring the island you can enjoy a variety of activities which include rides on an old dhow, sea kayaking, shore based fishing, mountain biking, snorkelling, birding, walking trails, and turtle and whale watching (season dependent). Guests may also enjoy scuba diving and deep sea fishing (at extra cost) and Vamizi has well qualified dive masters and other staff to guide you and supervise these activities.
