Grootberg Lodge
Perched on the rim of the Grootberg Plateau, the Grootberg Lodge (Big Mountain Lodge) stands sentinel over the Klip River Valley. The lodge has eleven en-suite thatch and rock chalets which offer views out over the gorge. Black Eagles hunt just below the level of your private deck. Other facilities include a swimming pool, a restaurant and bar. Approximately 12000 hectares have been set aside by the Khoadi / Hoas community for conservation and tourism and it is through this pristine wilderness that you meander either on foot or by 4x4 to encounter the inhabitants of this remote biosphere.
Grootberg Lodge is one of the first lodges in Namibia that is 100% owned by a conservancy. It has been funded by the European Union and the local private sector has supplied training and management skills to the project until it becomes self-sustainable. Another aim of the project is to encourage harmony between the human and animal populations by encouraging the locals to be more tolerant of lions, cheetahs and elephants, thus enabling them to see their value from a tourism perspective. The income from the project helps to offset the losses of households when predators kill their livestock or elephants damage their water installations.
There are a variety of activities designed to appeal to both adventure seekers and those who prefer gentler pursuits. Guests can enjoy guided walks on top of the plateau with highly knowledgeable guides who will share their knowledge of the local fauna, flora and rock formations. A more challenging walk is the guided walk down the mountain to the Klip River Springs where guests will see kudu, oryx, klipspringers and mountain zebras. One of the most popular activities is guided elephant tracking where a tracker will take you in search of the elusive desert elephants and you will have the opportunity to experience the life of the local Himba people. Another worthwhile activity is rhino tracking in a 4x4 vehicle and on foot at the Klip River or for horse enthusiasts, there are horse back safaris through the mountains of Damaraland where you will camp out under the stars, cooking on an open camp fire.
