Mowani Mountain Camp
Mowani Mountain Camp is situated in the vast and unspoilt wilderness between the Ugab and Huab Rivers in southern Damaraland. The location is like nowhere else on earth – perched up high on a rocky outcrop amongst large granite boulders overlooking the plains and distant mountains.
Mowani Camp consists of twelve luxury tents which are all uniquely designed and positioned with breathtaking views over the Damara landscape. The main lounge and dining area are housed under two interconnecting thatched bomas. Just below these two bomas is a small pool and deck area which has been built between the rocks and boulders. The camp has excellent eco and sustainability credentials and almost all the staff are from the local Damara tribe.
Activities include game drives to search for the elusive desert elephants, hiking and excursions to Twyfelfontein. This fascinating archaeological site is unequalled for its abundance of rock engravings, which number in excess of 2500, set in a U-shaped valley of unusual reddish sandstone formations and terraces. It is probably the largest and most spectacular collection of its kind in Africa and depicts many species of animals.
However the most memorable part of your Damara experience will be the simple moments, enjoying the sights and sounds of this unique little piece of Africa. Standing on your deck with the warm wood under your feet as you sip on an iced cold drink while you watch the red granite rocks glowing and the Acacia branches and distant mountains silhouetted against a fiery sunset or relaxing around the fire after dinner below a night sky, thick with countless stars and the stunning desert moonscape.
For those wanting to experience the best that Namibia has to offer, we would recommend combining a stay at Mowani with its sister property – Onguma tented Camp in the Etosha Game Reserve and Wolwedans Dune Lodge in Sossusvlei.
