Skeleton Coast Fly in Safari

For thirty years the Schoeman family has been synonymous with the Skeleton Coast. First Louw Schoeman and subsequently his sons Bertus and Andre have personally flown their guests on exciting four day small plane safaris from Windhoek along the Skeleton Coast to the Kunene River on the Angolan border.

The Skeleton Coast is one of the most hauntingly beautiful wilderness areas in Southern Africa. Great Atlantic breakers pound the seashore which is sometimes shrouded in mists which provide almost the only source of water for the plants, birds and wildlife. The shoreline is littered with huge whale bones, the remains of shipwrecks and giant seal colonies surrounded by scavenging jackals. A little inland you find the steep sided Hoarusib Canyon, seemingly endless dunescapes swirled into fantastic shapes by the wind, and giant ‘clay castles.’ For anything to survive here is a miracle, yet there are desert adapted plants and small oases which incredibly support black rhinoceros, desert elephant, leopard, ostrich and other creatures.

Over four days Bertus or Andre will fly you by small plane landing at several points along the coast enabling you to explore this fascinating area in depth under their expert guidance. They have comfortable bush camps set up at 3 contrasting points along the coastline, the last one being on the banks of the fast flowing Kunene River where you can enjoy a boat ride down the steep sided walls of the Kunene Canyon on this crocodile infested river. Bertus and Andre will also show you fascinating bushman rock engravings some of which are thousands of years old and will introduce you to a Himba village community which lives on an economy based around goats, much as it has done for centuries past.

You might combine this Skeleton Coast fly in safari with a visit to the Etosha National Park, Damaraland or the immense dunescapes of Sossusvlei.
