New Kubatana Camp in Gorongosa National Park

If you watched last night’s episode of Africa you’ll have seen Sir David Attenborough visit Mozambique’s Gorongosa National Park which lies at the southern end of the Great Rift Valley. You might not know it well, but Gorongosa is a fascinating place to see, known as ‘the place Noah left his ark’. If you’re looking for a really wild adventure, this is the place to be. Perhaps you’ve been to Africa several times before and already know that you love the experience or perhaps you’re looking for a real adventure where you’ll be spend hours tracking and seeking wildlife in the wilderness. Though not as prolific as other countries in Africa, the wildlife here is incredibly diverse.  Lake Urema is home to crocodiles and hippos whilst zebra, waterbuck and antelope roam the floodplains. Mount Gorongosa is topped with rainforest filled with endemic species found nowhere else on the planet. There’s also the Lion House, a conservation project, where Gorongosa’s lions spend their days, just as their ancestors did forty years ago.

Kubatana Camp is the only camp in the park and will be open from July this year. (Between July and September is the best time to visit, making it perfect for a last family holiday during school or university holidays.) The camp itself is on the banks of the Muscadizi River and comprises six tents, one of which is a special family tent and another, a honeymoon tent. Each has its own en-suite bathroom and is decorated stylishly yet authentically, bringing you back to Gorongosa’s golden era of the 60s. At the camp you go out on traditional game drives and explore this wonderful wilderness on foot or by boat. You’ll also be able to meet the people who behind the Gorongosa restoration story; researchers, ecologists and scientists. Fly camping is to be introduced soon too!

You can combine Gorongosa with several destinations in Africa but many people like to add on a relaxing break at one of Mozambique’s beach lodges for the perfect wild African safari.
