Bird Island

If you are an avid bird watcher, then an interesting place to visit would be Bird Island in the Republic of Seychelles. There are at least 97 recorded bird species that migrate through the island throughout the year and at least 20 different species of birds are visible at any one time. A luxury beach holiday would give you an opportunity to see this beautiful island and all of the magnificent birds that visit it.

Located about 37 miles north of Mahé, Bird Island is the most northern island in the Seychelles. It has much more to do than just bird watching. This island is the most distant from the other more popular islands in the Republic of Seychelles and there are many beautiful beaches offering great snorkeling and scuba diving opportunities. The east and south sides of the island are surrounded by a spectacularly colourful barrier reef which is home to many varieties of brightly coloured tropical fish. The contrast between the verdant green of the island and the striking blue and turquoise of the warm Indian Ocean makes for a sight that is not easily forgotten long after your luxury beach holiday.

The best time to take a beach holiday to see the most birds is in and around May. At this time, millions of birds migrate to Bird Island to partake in their yearly nesting rituals. The birds bring ocean water to their intended nesting spot. The water slowly dries out the grass, and then the birds will build their nests on the dry spot.

May is not the only month to plan a luxury beach holiday to this idyllic bird paradise. This is Bird Island, and thusly there are usually at least 20 different species of birds at any one time and even a smattering of other equally interesting animals. However, it all depends on the month:

  • January and February – A good variety of migratory birds fly through the area. Also, this is one of two breading seasons for the common noddy tern and a good time to see some hawksbill turtles

  • March and April – Sooty terns and lesser noddy terns begin gather for the upcoming breeding season. The last few remaining hawksbill turtle nests hatch

  • May – Sooty terns begin landing earlier each passing day and by the end of the month, they are constantly present on the ground. Lesser noddy terns begin hatching

  • October, November, and December – Hawksbill turtles begin to lay their eggs, and most will hatch about the beginning of December, and continue to hatch through April. This can be an exciting time for a luxury beach holiday

Bird Island is a great destination for a beach holiday that does not skimp on the beauty and wonder of nature. This little island in the Seychelles also has the interesting and fun activities that you would expect from a beach holiday .
