Malaria Free Safaris

During the African dry season you usually see few mosquitos and in remote unpopulated areas the risk of catching malaria is very low. However on safari in a malarial area you are advised to take anti malarial medication.

South Africa has a number of excellent malaria free reserves where you can see the Big Five, and the full range of African wildlife. Madikwe is in the north near the Botswana border a wild region of volcanic hills, open plains and fast flowing rivers. At Impodimo you find 8 luxurious glass fronted suites alongside a spring with superb views across miles of virgin bush. For a family Little Madikwe is the ultimate in privacy and comfort with a stylish two bedroom suite complete with its own chef and private safari guide. In Madikwe enjoy thrilling drives by open vehicle by day and night, and fascinating walking safaris, stalking creatures through the bush with your expert guide.

If you are visiting Cape Town and the Winelands, add a few days at Shamwari or Kwandwe. These sumptuous private lodges are set in wild hills and grassy plains near Port Elizabeth. Lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, big herds of antelope and buffalo thrive here. Also on the Garden Route, Gorah is the only lodge in the Addo Elephant Park home to the world’s most dense population of elephants. You can step back in time staying in one of their classic tented suites. You may be intrigued by the idea of a Relais & Chateaux tented camp, and will discover that there are no compromises in the quality of the cuisine and service at Gorah.

The other main malaria free area lies north of Johannesburg, convenient for a few days on safari at the end of a South African holiday. One of our favourites is Marataba, another Relais & Chateaux tented camp. Here the “tents” are even larger with luxury bathroom, elegant furnishing and a spacious verandah where you can relax between safaris and admire the vistas of rolling plains beside the towering Waterberg escarpments. Marataba is the only luxury camp in the 67,000 hectare Marakele malaria free reserve so you feel you have this Big Five reserve almost to yourselves.

Africa Exclusive can arrange malaria free safaris every bit as exciting and remote as any in Africa. The accommodation is in some cases outrageously luxurious yet right in the heart of wild Africa. Contact us now to plan a holiday you’ll treasure for a lifetime.

Now returned from our safari holiday I wanted to let you know that both Makanyane and Marataba and the reserves were quite excellent in terms of comfort, quality, food, staff and animal sightings. Absolutely first-class and everything went to plan. Thanks Africa Exclusive for your help in this.
