Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale is situated in the Mohale Mountains National Park which lies on the dramatic shores of Lake Tanganyika in heart of the remote African interior of south west Tanzania. The Mohale Mountains National Park is one of the few places where there is no infrastructure and access can only be gained by light aircraft or boat.

The six wooden bandas that make up Greystoke Mahale are situated on the banks of the palm fringed lake with hanging vines and the tall trees of the tropical forest as a back drop.  The open fronted wooden bomas look out onto the soft sandy beach where you can spend your afternoons watching the sunset from your private veranda or enjoy a quiet evening on the upstairs deck where you will be mesmerized by the moons glistening reflection on the crystal clear water. The interiors have been fashioned from seasoned dhow timber with open air hot water showers that back on to the lush forest.

The Mohale Mountains National Park is home to the largest population of chimpanzees in the world and the highlight of your stay will be the hikes into the forest in search of these amazing creatures.  As you make your way through the dense forest you will feel as if you have entered the Garden of Eden.    The mountains slopes support a diversity of forest fauna which include the red colobus, red and blue tailed monkeys and many colourful birds and butterflies.  The walk is not too strenuous but it can take up to an hour to find the chimpanzees, making it the ideal vacation for those with adventurous spirits.

The long walk is well worth the effort. Observe these special creatures with their natural grace and anthropomorphic features; watching quietly as their daily life unfolds before you, swinging effortlessly between the vines, grooming each other, squabbling and cuddling each other on the leafy forest floor.  A visit with the chimpanzees will have a lasting effect on you. It is a truly unforgettable experience.

Other activities at Greystoke Mahale include canoeing, fishing, snorkelling, swimming and romantic sunset boat trips.
