Hatari Lodge
Situated at the northern edge of Tanzania's beautiful Arusha National Park is Joerg and Marlies Gabriel's Hatari Lodge. Within sight of the snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, the dormant Mount Meru and the Momella swamps, the camp offers visitors the chance to appreciate the rich diversity of this region.
Consisting of three buildings, this unique "luxury bush hotel" features nine rooms all of which have been decorated in comfortable '60's and '70's retro style. Each of the rooms features an open fireplace and large en-suite bathroom. Three of the rooms offer spectacular views from their own private terraces. The oldest of the buildings still serves as the central living area and dining room of the lodge. As well as a library, it boasts a lounge, bar, a verandah and deck from which to gaze across the vast rain forests and the area's lakes to Mount Kilimanjaro's magnificent slopes. Hatari Lodge's old world glamour is sure to charm you.
In addition to Hatari Lodge there is nearby Shu'mata Camp which has been designed for those visitors wanting to venture further afield. Its five luxury tents feature hand-made Maasai furniture, flushable toilets and warm water. To reduce its carbon footprint, the camp is solar-powered.
Though the area is rife with wildlife, the resident animals of Hatari Lodge leave most visitors feeling they needn’t to go out to far in search for others. With over 100 giraffes, 200 roaming buffalos as well as bushbacks and a family of warthogs to amuse you during the day the resident leopard and pack of hyenas battle it out to determine territorial supremacy after dark.
In addition to watching the wildlife, there are plenty of activities available to the guests at Hatari Lodge. Watch the flamingos and many other bird species on Big Momella or try your hand at canoeing on the Little Momella Lake for a close-up look at hippos or waterbuck. Take a game drive through the nearby Arusha National Park or spend the day on a walking safari of the Ngurduto crater floor. You can even go on a hike with a Maasai naturalist to see a variety of medical plants, learn about traditional Maasai food preparation and collect plants for rope making and other ancient Maasai arts. These are only a few of the many activities that Hatari Lodge offers to occupy your time. And then at the end of an activity filled day you can enjoy a delicious picnic basket lunch packed by the kitchen staff of Hatari Lodge.
