Old Mondoro Bushcamp
Old Mondoro Bushcamp is a small seasonal camp which opens between May and October every year. It is surrounded by vast floodplains and open woodland on the banks of the Zambezi River in the lower Zambezi National Park, a few hundred miles from Victoria Falls in Zambia. The word mondoro means lion in Shona and the camp derives its name from the legend of an old white lion that used to frequent the area at the time of the great explorers like David Livingstone.
The camp is beautifully rustic and is styled on the old East African camps; comfortable yet unpretentious and uncomplicated with an open and adventurous feel. The focus is placed firmly on the wildlife and the natural setting, ensuring that your bush experience is authentic and unique. The camp consists of six en-suite bush reed chalets with canvas roofs catering for a maximum of eight people at a time. The rooms which are built on temporary slabs have comfortable beds with mosquito nets and hot water canvas bucket showers and wash basins. The communal lounge area overlooks a myriad of islands in the Zambezi River and there is a traditional bush kitchen where delicious meals and fresh baked bread are prepared in a homemade oven. At night the camp is lit up by traditional paraffin lanterns allowing you to listen to the tranquil sounds of the bush without the hum of a generator. Dinner is enjoyed by candlelight under a canopy of stars and breakfast is prepared and served around the open camp fire.
Old Mondoro Bushcamp is situated in some of Africa’s finest walking country and you will be able to enjoy walking and river safaris with knowledgeable guides who will expertly navigate you through the remote wilderness in search of buffalo, elephants, hippopotamus, leopards, lions and the seasonal wild dogs that roam the plains. Plains game such as kudu and zebra are also seen on a regular basis.
Anyone who wants to try their hands at tiger fishing might catch a fish up to 20lbs and be assured of a good fight! A strict catch-and-release policy is observed.
