Shumba Camp
Located in the center of the ‘Kafue crown’, Shumba Camp is surrounded by 300m² of sheer beauty. Near the area’s permanent water supply, Shumba boasts an appealing mix of habitat, including woodland and seasonal grassy areas or dambos. This environment is a perfect home for the largest diversity of mammals in the country – an amazing 55 different species!
Shumba Camp, named for a Shona word meaning ‘lion’, is the perfect place for a small private safari. With six raised luxury tents you’ll find breathtaking views of surrounding plains and wildlife. Maintaining the beauty of the Zambian region, the rooms are large with indoor and outdoor showers, luxury furnishings and an equally delightful dining and bar area. The vista is the focus here, be it the first glimmer of sunrise, the undeveloped Busanga Plains or prides of lions up to 20 strong. Wherever you turn, you’ll see a world teeming with wildlife and beauty.
With a maximum of 12 guests per safari, you’ll enjoy activities led by enthusiastic guides with expert knowledge of the area and its diverse animal population. Day and night excursions provide a wonderful opportunity to experience Zambia at its best. While you’ll see puku, lechwe, hippo and lion from the comfort of your room, the game drives take you further into the stomping grounds of zebra, buffalo and oribi. Lichtenstein's hartebeest, wildebeest, wild dog packs, lone cheetah and the ever-present lion are regularly seen.
And don’t forget to look up! With 491 documented species of birds, the ground isn’t the only place bustling with life. With species like the African finfoot, half-collared Kingfisher, red-throated twinspot, Böhm's bee-eater and Western banded snake-eagle, and trained birding guides to help you know the difference, you’re sure to see the skies as never before. Don’t forget to arrange a visit to the nearby water bird breeding colony. This full day boating safari will offer you a quality view of a whole myriad of bird life and interesting animals. Come eye-to-eye with curious hippos, view crocodiles on the look-out for a treat and then discover the beauty of a Zambian sunset as you head back to the camp.
