Tafika Camp
Tucked away in a grove of old leadwood trees by the winding South Luangwa River deep in the South Luangwa National Park, you’ll find Tafika Camp.
For fifteen years it has been the home of John and Carol Coppinger, who are delighted to share their love and knowledge of this little corner of Africa.
John and his guides will take you walking beside the river and down ancient tracks following the spoor of big cats, giraffe, nervous antelope herds and mighty elephant. He will take you by open vehicle exploring this delightful valley scattered with beautiful curved lagoons and meandering rivers. Every day is different and the pace relaxed so that you can savour your surroundings, spending as long as you like watching families of elephant, drinking and cavorting in the river or a pride of lion as they silently stalk a buffalo herd before sunset.
John also takes guests up in his microlight which is great fun first thing in the morning as you buzz like a huge dragonfly above the buffalo herds, zebra and impala.
The camp has six spacious, surprisingly comfortable chalets, with large beds, places to relax and an en-suite bathroom. Carol and her team serve delicious cuisine, sometimes springing a surprise bush breakfast or dinner as part of a game drive.
Walking safaris are one of John’s favourite activities and he has set up two little bushcamps, Crocodile River Camp and Chikoko Tree Camp, which are a couple of hours walk from Tafika. If you enjoy strolling through the bush with an amazing guide, feeling you’re a thousand miles from civilisation, five or six days spent at these three camps are the perfect way to enjoy the African bush, making this one of the essential ingredients of any top quality Zambia safari.
