Tau Pan Camp is situated inside the world famous Central Kalahari Game Reserve right on the edge of the beautiful Tau Pan. “Kalahari” is derived from the Tswana word Kgala meaning “great thirst” – and it has vast areas covered by red sand without any permanent water.

Location
The Kalahari Desert is the largest sand basin in the world stretching 2500km from the northern regions of South Africa through to Namibia/Angola and ending in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world (52,800km²) and for many years was closed to the public, hence it is known for being one of Africa’s last true wild areas.
Predators abound, with plentiful especially the famous Kalahari black-maned lion – cheetah, leopard and jackal. Brown hyena and wild dog are also found in the area.

Accommodation
Situated on an established sand ridge overlooking Tau Pan, the camp commands stunning views of the permanent Tau Pan water hole and the endless Kalahari horizon. Guests are accommodated in eight custom-built desert rooms under thatch, while the main area consists of a dining room, lounge area and a viewing deck.
The camp also offers facilities such as a swimming pool, interpretation centre/library and curio shop. One of the rooms is a two-bedroom unit ideal for families of four or five.

The reserve gets the migratory animals such as springbok, wildebeest in their thousands and is quite a sight to behold. Bird life is aplenty with the world’s heaviest flying bird – the kori bustard - being common as well as the black korhaan who continuously calls during the daytime. Many an hour can be wiled away watching these fascinating animals.

During your stay at Tau Pan Camp you will be able to enjoy exciting game drives in open topped 4 x 4 vehicles as well as guided walks with San bushmen who will divulge fascinating facts and entertain you by answering all your questions about bush survival. Tau Pan is situated within a National Park and is a designated ecologically sensitive area, and for this reason you cannot drive off road or at night.
For those that wish to, there is also the opportunity to experience a spectacular sleep out under the stars. This incredible star bed set on a raised platform, is in a beautiful location just a short walk from the lodge and promotes an exciting feeling of remoteness with only the sounds of the African bush for company.

Environment
The camp is designed to have minimal impact on the environment. In addition to efficient use of solar panels, energy saving designs and reduce plastic use, all waste water is treated in a specially designed above ground treatment plant to avoid cross contamination with wildlife and plants. Once fully treated and safe, the water is returned to the ground.
Community
Kwando Safaris help local communities wherever possible. Often, they will arrange fundraising events and donate useful items to local villages. In recent years they combined a celebration of Botswana's 50th Anniversary of Independence they purchased and received donations of household items which were distributed to towns and villages. This is something Kwando have continued to do on an annual basis.
