Bush Camps

“Bush Camps” are lodges and camps which, while very comfortable, are simpler in design.  You will have proper beds, en suite bathroom, and a very good standard of food.  You will not have a spa and there may not be a pool.  These bush camps are often owner run, set in beautiful remote locations and offer a variety of different safari activities guided by experts who love what they do.  They offer good value for money and give you a sense of being close to the wilds of Africa.

All safari countries have superb little bush camps, often with their own grass airstrip so you can fly straight in, starting your safari the minute you land.  Old Mondoro in Zambia is a classic example.  It is set among big old trees on the banks of the Zambezi River.  Elephant, buffalo and antelope sometimes walk through Old Mondoro as if it isn’t there.  An elephant might appear beside the dining lodge as you enjoy lunch before she takes a swim in the Zambezi.

Lebala Camp in Botswana is another excellent bush camp, set on a huge private reserve where great herds roam the savannah plains.  Each spacious tent at Lebala has a large bed, simple furniture, en suite bathroom with bath, shower and flush wc all set on a big wooden deck raised off the ground.  It would take three hours to drive to the next nearest camp, so you can enjoy a real sense of privacy at Lebala.

In northern Tanzania, we can arrange for you to stay at a semi-mobile bush camp which is relocated to follow the great wildebeest migration as it moves across the Serengeti plains.  This is a real “Out of Africa” experience.  The camp has four spacious tents each with large bed, simple furniture and en suite shower and wc.  An experienced support team runs the camp and prepares delicious meals which you can enjoy al fresco or in the dining tent. This camp is always located on a remote private site and each separate party of guests has their own private vehicle and guide.

Africa’s bush camps can provide some of the finest safari experiences. We know them intimately. Call us to begin planning a safari of a lifetime.

Old Mondoro - Zambia

In contrast to most of the camps in the Lower Zambezi, the Cumings family, who own Chiawa Camp, have created something a little different in Old Mondoro. The concept of the camp is simple – to step back from the ultra-luxurious lodges seemingly springing up everywhere, and rather provide guests with an authentic remote safari that concentrates on the wildlife and bush experience. Where the call of the hyena replaces the hum of a generator, where some of the best guides in Africa will help guests experience a closer look at one of Africa’s finest wildlife sanctuaries.

Tafika - Zambia

Tafika Camp is situated in the shade of huge leadwood trees by the Luangwa River in the northern part of the South Luangwa National Park. The camp has six spacious reed and thatch chalets, each with proper beds, simple safari furniture and en-suite flush w.c. and shower, which is open to the stars..

Nsolo - Zambia

Nsolo Bush Camp is about an hour from Kapani located on a bend in the Luwi river under a grove of immense trees near to a waterhole. The accommodation is in four rustic yet comfortable thatched chalets, each set on wooden decks under the shade of the trees, with proper beds, stylish furnishings, outside en-suite bathrooms and private verandas out front.

Kicheche Bush Camp - Kenya

Kicheche Bush Camp is located in the newly established Olare Orok Conservancy bordering the Masai Mara Reserve. The camp is located in a prime wildlife area and is also ideal to experience the migration. The camp is a classic, intimate, luxury bush camp completely unfenced, accommodating a maximum of only twelve guests under canvas.

Selinda Explorers - Botswana

Selinda Explorers is reminiscent of the style of early explorers and the main area is covered in Persian style furnishings, with huge cushions and hammocks strung from trees providing the perfect place to relax in between safari adventures. In the evening a campfire is lit on the banks of the spillway and delicious dinners are enjoyed under a star filled Africa sky.

Camp Kalahari - Botswana

Situated in the same location as Jack’s small camp, set up during his first pioneering visit into the Makgadikgadi, Camp Kalahari takes you back a time of exploration, with its wonderfully relaxed and traditional style. The camp has ten spacious Meru style tents, one of which can accommodate a family of four, all with comfortable but traditional furnishings and an en-suite bathroom.
