Botswana has some of Africa’s finest luxury camps; each situated on an enormous private reserve. Sandibe Camp in the Okavango offers some of Botswana’s most exciting game viewing in idyllic scenery, where sparkling waterways thread their way through grassy plains and woodland. You return from a thrilling drive, walk or boat ride among the elephant and leopard to relax on the private deck of your tented suite. Then share a delicious lunch of cold meat, salads, maybe an imaginative pasta dish and dessert before a snooze or a dip in the pool.
Calvin and Louise Cottar run Cottar’s Camp in the Masai Mara. Like Sandibe, it’s on a huge private reserve; the perfect base to witness the Great Migration in August and September, and a wealth of wildlife all year round. Sweeping swathes of pure white canvas, old leather and crystal glasses give this place panache and personality. The views of the endless Mara plains below are pure Africa.
Your tailormade safari might include three or four such places - each in a different beautiful location, each with its own style and character. At Africa Exclusive we know all the finest tented camps. Contact us now to begin planning your perfect safari.
Mombo Camp is situated beneath a shady canopy of huge trees on the edge of a broad floodplain and is widely regarded as the most exclusive camp in Botswana. The camp accommodates a maximum of twenty guests in huge luxurious tented suites, each with proper beds, comfortable soft chairs, furniture and en suite bathrooms – including an exciting outside shower if you want to bath under the stars. The main area of the camp comprises a dining room, bar and living area and overlooks a vast plain which is often teeming with wildlife making it the perfect place to sit back with a cool drink in between activities as you take in the beauty of your surroundings. There is also a plunge pool for relaxing in during the heat of the day.
Zarafa is one of the most exclusive camps in Botswana with just four luxuriously appointed “marquee style” tented suites. With a maximum of eight guests the emphasis here is on individual hospitality, privacy and serenity. Each tented suite covers over 150m² and is positioned at the edge of the forest to emphasise the spectacular view over the floodplains and savannah. Each suite has a separate spacious bedroom, an en-suite bathroom with copper bath and shower, as well as a separate lounge and a large shady veranda.
Chiawa Camp consists of nine superior tented suites, each set on its own split level elevated timber platform each either with panoramic views of the wide, slow moving Zambezi River or the dry riverbed that feeds down to the Zambezi and where animals are regularly seen. The tents are insect proof and have twin or super king size beds, luxurious furnishings and 24hr electricity and complimentary wifi, which to maintain the peace in camp can only be used in the privacy of guest rooms. The magnificent en suite bathrooms which include an indoor and outdoor shower and wc are partially open to the river which can be seen from the comfort of the beautiful ball and claw Victorian bath.
Mara Plains Camp is very intimate with just seven octagonal tented rooms raised on stilts and each has its own private veranda. The rooms are open at the sides during the day with large king-size beds, comfortable furniture and en suite bathroom with double vanity, flush toilets and a shower with continual hot water. The camp is centred around three huge open-air marquis style tents connected together. There are two lounges with a small library and writing area and a main dining room that can be utilised when not dining under the stars. The décor is rich in browns encouraging a relaxing break from the day’s activities. The central area is raised on decking and blessed with extraordinary views. The camp is run with a good sense of style and the standard of food and service is excellent.
Situated within a huge private concession area which borders the western corridor of the Serengeti, Singita Sabora Plains Tented Camp enjoys excellent year round game viewing. Offering amongst the finest tented accommodation in Tanzania, Sabora Plains has just nine lavish tents which are air conditioned and decorated in the old ‘campaign’ style of the great safaris which took place in the 1920’s. Each tent comprises a bedroom and reading area, bathroom with bath and outdoor shower, and a viewing deck with your own Swarovski spotting scope.
Ruckomechi Camp is situated at the western reaches of the Zambezi floodplains, within Mana Pools National Park. It is sheltered by a huge stand of acacia and mahogany and it looks across the river to the massive escarpment of Africa’s Great Rift Valley, over 2000 feet high. Behind the camp stretch the floodplains and ancient forests, and it is this combination of river and mountain, forest and floodplain that sets Ruckomechi apart.

There is a world of difference between one of our tailormade safaris and most package holidays printed in a brochure. Package holidays are usually designed to be as cheap as possible and of course involve large numbers of people doing the same thing. Our safaris use small, more exclusive and remote camps usually with guests flying in, and often virtually everything is included in the price. The experience is completely different.
Many of these small lodges and camps have broadly similar prices, and it is possible to arrange a superb two week safari for between £4,000 to £7,000 per person ($7,000 – $11,000) season dependant, all inclusive. Realistically it is difficult to reduce that figure, and by including Botswana in peak season, chartering a private plane, disappearing to some magical desert island, or flying at the front of the plane it’s easy to substantially increase that figure!
