Why Visit Zambia

Asked to identify Kenya, Tanzania, or South Africa on a map, most of us do ok. But if we have to move inland and start correctly naming the smaller countries of Southern Africa, the geography becomes rather more challenging. If there’s one place where you ought to put a bucket list pin in the map, however, it should be Zambia. This landlocked country is jam-packed with beautiful landscapes and incredible wildlife, not to mention Victoria Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The main population surrounds the capital, Lusaka, leaving the rest of the country largely as a wilderness waiting to be explored.

Read on to discover some of our favourite experiences in Zambia.

The Migration on the Liuwa Plain

You will be familiar with the Great Migration through the Serengeti and Masai Mara, but what about the Liuwa Plain? This national park in Zambia’s remote northwest has the second largest migration in Africa, with massive herds of wildebeest and zebra. The best time to see the migration is in November, and the animal numbers are increasing year on year.

What is really exciting about the Liuwa Plain is that there is only one permanent camp – Time & Tide’s King Lewanika Lodge – in the entire park, and it accommodates just 14 guests. That means that when you go on a game drive, you are unlikely to see another vehicle. It’s just you, the wildlife, and the great outdoors.

Birding in Kafue National Park

Kafue National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Zambia, and though it is easily accessible from Lusaka, it is still relatively little explored compared to the much more famous Luangwa Valley. There’s a good selection of wildlife – including elephant and lion – but what makes it really special are the birds.

In Kafue, bird watchers will find their paradise. There are over 500 recorded species, which is roughly the same number as in the entirety of Europe. Guides Phil and Tyrone at Musekese Camp are passionate about all their feathered neighbours, however big or small. They will take you out on river boat safaris to see the water birds, as well as on nature walks and game drives.

North Luangwa: Your private wilderness

The Luangwa Valley is the hub for safaris in Zambia and the birthplace of the walking safari. The majority of visitors go to South Luangwa National Park, which is undeniably stunning, but for a truly exclusive safari experience we recommend North Luangwa.

This is the unspoilt wilderness you have always dreamed of. There are very few roads and even fewer camps: coming here is a rare and private experience, where you will experience the Zambian wilderness at its most authentic. We might suggest a stay Mwaleshi Camp, a simple seasonal camp with en-suite bathrooms open to the sky. Here you’ll stay in rustic thatched chalets enjoying the traditions of African life, such as fresh hearth baked bread, in an unparalleled location. You’re likely to see elephant, giraffe, and antelope without leaving camp, as they frequently wander by.

In our minds, Zambia is one of the most exciting safari destinations in Southern Africa, yet still surprisingly underappreciated by international visitors. We want to keep it that way, sharing Zambia’s many natural treasures only with a favoured few. If you think that you might like to be amongst them, following the migration in the Liuwa Plain, birding in Kafue, or enjoying a private safari experience in North Luangwa, call us today on 01604 628979 to start planning an unforgettable African trip.
