Wow – A leopard kill right outside a guest tent at Shumba Camp! This was a very unusual event that occurred one day when some of the guests were leaving the camp in a helicopter. The exploration guide spotted the leopard dashing out of the bush close to the camp and a short while later it was spotted by the camps housekeeper. She almost came face to face with the leopard who was feeding on a lechwe outside one of the tents. The female was quite skittish so the team set up a camera to film her as she fed on the carcass. They think she is the sub adult female with cubs, that has been spotted on the plains. Another amazing sighting has been of a female lion and her young cubs that have denned in the long grass close to one of the other tents in the camp. She was spotted on quite a few occasions before the young family set off to join the rest of the pride – a few kilometres from the camp.
Shumba Camp is situated in the heart of the game rich Busanga Plains – home to hundreds of lechwe, puku, roan, oribi, wildebeest, zebra, hartebeest and buffalo. These huge herds of plains game attract good numbers of predators like lion, leopard, wild dog and cheetah that provide guests with some spectacular sightings. The camp is small and intimate with just six spacious and luxuriously appointed tents that boast fantastic views over the surrounding plains. A maximum of twelve guests can be accommodated at any one time which makes it a great camp for extended families and small groups of friends celebrating a special occasion. The focus at Shumba is on the wildlife and activities include day and night game drives and expertly guided walking safaris. The quality of guiding is superb and the highlight of a stay at Shumba is watching the predator/ plains game interaction and discovering the elusive nocturnal creatures. The region is known for its huge prides of lions – sometimes up to 20 strong.

There is a world of difference between one of our tailormade safaris and most package holidays printed in a brochure. Package holidays are usually designed to be as cheap as possible and of course involve large numbers of people doing the same thing. Our safaris use small, more exclusive and remote camps usually with guests flying in, and often virtually everything is included in the price. The experience is completely different.
Many of these small lodges and camps have broadly similar prices, and it is possible to arrange a superb safari holiday for between £6,000 to £10,000 per person ($8,000 – $13,000) season dependant, all inclusive. Realistically it is difficult to reduce that figure, and by including Botswana in peak season, chartering a private plane, disappearing to some magical desert island, or flying at the front of the plane it’s easy to substantially increase that figure!
