Mara Plains Camp
In the heart of the 35,000 acre Olare Motorogi Conservancy lies Mara Plains Camp. Access is over a bridge across the river, and when you cross it feels as if you are entering a private kingdom, a world apart from the norm. Location
Kenya’s exclusive Olare Motorogi Conservancy borders the Masai Mara National Reserve, and it’s here you will find the exquisite Mara Plains Camp on a bend in the Ntiakitiak River. It is an idyllic spot in the middle of one of the richest wild ecosystems in the world. The land is leased from the local Maasai community, and the income it generates supports more than 1,000 families.
Accommodation
Mara Plains’ five tents will sleep 10 guests in spectacular surroundings. The interior design reflects the cultural diversity of Kenya, with Arab and Swahili influences, as well as a nod to the colonial period. The strong accents of deep red and purple honour the Maasai people. You’ll relax on campaign furniture, and the residential feel complements rather than detracts from the wilderness outside.
Experiences
- Owned by renowned wildlife photographers and conservationists Dereck and Beverly Joubert the quality of safari experience is possibly the only thing that surpasses the beauty of the camp.
- There are plenty of ways to explore the Masai Mara and to get up close to its wildlife: morning and night time game drives to balloon flights across the reserve, horse riding and fascinating cultural excursions to local villages.
- You’ll be in the Olare Motorogi Conservancy, known as the quietest (in terms of vehicles) place in the Mara region and home to the highest concentration of big cats anywhere in Africa.

Conservation
Mara Plains’ parent company, Great Plains Conservation (GPC) have set up Project Ranger, as a response to the Covid-19 crisis. The project aims to provide an emergency fund supporting those on the front-lines of conservation, filling a critical gap created by the pandemic.
Environment
In 2019 GPC began a new programme, Conservation Grows. Through the project they aim to restore indigenous trees to landscapes across Kenya, Botswana, and Zimbabwe. Working with local communities and schools Conservation Grows teaches the value of indigenous trees and their critical role in functioning ecosystems.
Community
Since 2010 GPC have partnered with local women in the communities surrounding Mara Plains Camp to honour and support traditional handicrafts and provide income generating opportunities through the sale of beadwork and other products in the camps’ bush boutiques.
