Why the Himalayas?
The Himalayas are rugged, remote and sparsely populated. People here have close ethnic, linguistic and cultural ties with Tibet – the region feels very different from other parts of India. The Kashmir Valley is one of our favourite places to explore, with turquoise rivers flowing through wildflower-studded meadows during springtime. At Dal Lake, it’s a special treat to stay in a cedar houseboat with the enormous mountain peaks serving as a backdrop.
Crossing the mountain passes from Kashmir to Ladakh, or Little Tibet, is not for the faint of heart. The road twists and turns but is well-worth the effort as the high altitude desert is filled with ancient Buddhist monasteries, stupas and forts. It’s even possible to spot snow leopard in the Hemis National Park during the winter.
